Creativity Is Dead

Maybe that’s a bit harsh, but let me explain my thoughts.

Musicians, graphic designers, journalists, programmers – yeah, you name it. Everybody are joining the Artificial Intelligence (AI) era. And understandably so. It’s freakin’ impressive what ie. ChatGPT can do now.

Most of the cover-images used on the blog posts here are generated using AI. And granted, I’ve even used it to help me generate some of the frontend of this site. Back in 2020 I had a poster on the wall saying “Artificial Intelligence Is No Match For Human Stupidity”. I didn’t really believe it would accelerate as fast as it has.

AI can do pretty much anything. It’s really just a matter of writing the right prompt for it now.

Imagine this: You’re in the office and someone shows you the next batch of advertisement creatives for your company. Usually, if we like what we see we’ll say something along the line of “That looks great! Good job!”. Maybe in the future we’ll get used to hear “Nice prompted!”.

Or a new song is playing on the radio. It might be a real artist, but the lyrics and music are generated by AI. “But what about autotune? That’s has been used for ages!” – yes, and in my opinion it destroys music. And knowing it all came from AI? Yeah, I think that will too.

I am not normally an advocate of regulation and oversight — I think one should generally err on the side of minimizing those things — but this is a case where you have a very serious danger to the public.

I’m not saying AI is bad. Nor do I say it’ll take over the world. But I do believe we need to keep the creativity alive somehow.

Will this be the death of creativity?
